ROTM: Jessica Oglesby The Dancing Queen
Meet our ROTM, Jessica Oglesby!
Jessica moved to LA 3 years ago to follow her dream; dance. She’s been dancing since she was 3-years-old and truth be told, Jessica took her very 1st steps to Janet Jackson’s music and has been dancing ever since. She’s done everything from contemporary to tap and hip hop to jazz.
Being a dancer means finding clothes that are “danceable.” Jessica describes her personal style as quirky. She loves big and flowy t-shirts and pants, and of course a killer pair of sneakers.
Q: Who is your style icon
A: Teyana Taylor because of her boyish-style that has feminine touches.
Q: What do you wear to auditions?
A: I like to buy/save for something special for auditions that I could wear out for a night on the town.
Q: What do you audition for?
A: In the past 5 months, I’ve auditioned to go on tour, music videos, live performances, and award shoes.
Q: What has been your favorite dance performance?
A: Last year I performed with 60 other dancers at the N.E.R.D album release party!
So how does Jessica manage to live in LA while chasing her dream to be a professional dancer? She lays out strict spending rules for herself like: only setting aside $1-3 per day on reeling items she loves, and using Postmates to get groceries and other essentials without impulse buying.
Jessica also recommends to other people on ‘dancer budgets’ to make lasting relationships with your dance instructors, because sometimes they wave the cost. PRO TIP: If you’re looking to get into the LA dance community, start networking! It will save you money here and there and you’ll be doing what you LOVE.
Our ROTM wants to tell YOU, the reader, “Don’t go above your means. Don’t force something [like getting those $300 shoes you want right now], because what will be, will be, and it’s not the end of the world.” Overall, you can do anything you put your mind to in life! Whether it be saving for new kicks or chasing your professional dream. You can achieve anything if you stay smart, make a plan, and trust in yourself.
So what’s next for Jessica? She’ll keep dancing and dancing, and maybe even one day be a dancer for Missy Elliot! But for now, she is currently reeling in an Ivy Park sweatshirt and ASOS knee-high boots.
