Met Gala 2019 Recap: The Super Bowl Of Fashion
The Met Gala annual style soiree just happened and here is everything you need to know about fashion’s biggest night!
WTH is Met Gala, anyway?
Met Gala takes place every year at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is considered the ‘Super Bowl of Fashion’. Every year some of the hottest names in fashion, music, movies and sports come together to celebrate the opening night of the Costume Institute's newest exhibition. Celebs arrive in stunning—and sometimes controversial—get-ups that match the gala’s chosen theme. Not only is it a chance for A-list stars to show off their ensembles, but its a fundraiser for the Costume Institute. This year’s gala was hosted by Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, Harry Styles, and Gucci designer, Alessandro Michele.
What’s up with the theme, Camp: Notes on Fashion?
Camp has nothing to do with cargo pants, windbreakers, and mosquito nets. It has everything to do with basking in the fabulousness, irony, and humor of being extra. The new exhibit is an exploration of how avant garde fashion has been used throughout history as a form of self-expression and escapism. The concept was inspired by Susan Sontag's 1964 essay that defines camp as "love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration."
